Make a Picture into a Puzzle

George Vondriska shows you how to use a scroll saw to turn any of your favorite pictures in to a jigsaw puzzle. He tells you which blade you should use depending on the thickness of your material and demonstrates some of the woodworking techniques you can utilize when cutting out the pieces.

    I can’t imagine “winging it” on the cutouts. I was hoping for something like an overlay.

    You’re right on the “winging it”. However, i think that you could start by practicing on a piece with no picture. Then discipline yourself not to follow outlines in a picture.

    If you do not feel comfortable “winging it” look online for overlays.

    If you are uneasy about cutting freestile, you can use a clear wrap and cover the picture, then w/ a magic marker trace cut patterns on the wrap to provide a cutting guide. You can then scroll saw your pattern of cut lines you made on the clear wrap. Don’t worry if you do not match the cutting guide exactly. I also take into consideration the age of the person the puzzle is for, and the younger the recipient the larger I make the puzzle pieces. Family pictures make an excellent subject for Christmas puzzles. Make sure there is enough detail in the picture so that the puzzle can be re-assembled.
